Workshop with Destination Wedding Photographer Jonas Peterson

Workshop with top 10 Destination Wedding Photographer Jonas Peterson, by Joseph Hall Bristol Wedding Photographer. Words and pics of my time at the Gotland workshop

It’s been a couple of weeks since my trip to Sweden. It was an opportunity to meet, chat, photograph and live with a bunch of hugely talented international photographers. To learn, share and become inspired. Now, I have a pretty bad memory, the majority of information seeming to float away into the foggy past; however, two weeks on and I am still full of inspiration and invaluable information that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
Why Sweden?

Why travel to the pretty island of Gotland? Why not meet in London or Bristol?! I guess I knew that this workshop would be different and rather special. Jonas Peterson hosts a few workshops each year and this was the first time that he’s held one in his home country. Sweden is where Jonas Peterson was born, where he lived for the first 25 odd years of his life and where he got married last year. Now based in Australia with his kids, Gotland is where he returns to every summer, to catch up with his family and relax. This workshop was also longer than most, it was three days of living and learning together – studying, eating, drinking and sleeping as one big group… also, it was in a beautiful part of the world that I had always wanted to visit, a part of the world that I will definitely be returning to!

Why a workshop?

As a photographer it is so important to be inspired and excited about what you do. To absorb yourself in new creative influences is imperative; whether that be music, design, people, culture, photography, paintings, films, books or even new places. The creative spark that drives the way you see and view things will always emerge in your work.

Having attended only one other workshop, I have come to realise how important they are in stimulating this process. Last year I was fortunate enough to see top 10 ten world wedding photographer Fer Juaristi, the Mexican destination wedding photographer, while he was in Manchester. This was the first workshop that I had ever been to and it was brilliant. Fer is a very unique and talented man. His photography is fantastically individual and I was keen understand his thoughts and approaches to the subject. Check my post here...

So, why Jonas Peterson?

Although I tend not to look at the work of other wedding photographers, there definitely is a fantastic new bunch of snappers producing some really interesting and creative photography. However, there are a few guys that really stand out head and shoulders above the rest, of which Jonas is definitely one of them. If you haven’t seen his work I highly recommend having a peek here!

So, when the opportunity arose for me to catch up with Jonas Peterson, who’s style is fairly similar to my own, I leapt at the chance. Jonas is one of the biggest and best location wedding photographers in the world and he travels to countless stunningly beautiful destinations every year. Yes, you might think that if you were to travel to the worlds loveliest destinations, you too would be able to produce some rather delightful work! However, it is not these destinations that make his work. Jonas’ photography manages to pour out emotion. He captures natural, tender scenes time after time, producing truly priceless work.

Throughout my stay in Gotland I took a few pics of the place, including some of the lovely Sylvia and Jonathan… take a peek here and if you get the chance, go and visit Gotland!

If you’re a photographer, particularly a wedding photographer – do try and catch up with Jonas, he’s rad! Oh and check out the photobomb at the end!!
